Welcome to Writing Lab
Writing Lab teaches students how to organize their thoughts as well as how to write! Students in grades 3-8 develop skills to write expository, persuasive, descriptive, and narrative essays in a timed setting. All Writing Lab students hone time management skills while learning to complete an engaging, detailed 5-paragraph essay in 45 minutes. Writing Lab requires two sessions per week to give students time for brainstorming with instructors, independent drafting, and guided revision.
How Writing Lab Works:
Day 1: Prompt Day – Students are given a grade-appropriate writing prompt and take 15 minutes to brainstorm with their tutors. The students spend the remaining 45 minutes writing their essays. Upon completion, the tutors evaluate first drafts based on the students’ train of thought, grammar, use of vocabulary, intent, and logical progression.
Day 2: Revision Day – Students read their first drafts aloud with their tutors and make revisions together for 15 minutes. This process aligns Writing Lab students with the Common Core State Standards and develops writing mastery. The students then have 45 minutes to re-write the essay and submit it for grading.
