MEK’s summer College Essay Boot Camp
MEK’s College Essay Boot Camp is a 3 day intensive course that lets students create and finish a polished, memorable common application essay prompt.
This course is designed to help students write a personal narrative that will impress a college admission officer while also learning more about their resume and the college application process in general.
Here is a breakdown of the 3 days:
Students are introduced to the counselors and given a brainstorming sheet. They spend time individually, in small groups, and with the counselor brainstorming the perfect topic for their essay. Counselors help students find a common thread to showcase in their essay that will tie their essay, resume, and interests all together. In other words, they help students show college admission officers who they really are and what their passions are.
Then, they work on how to develop that topic into an actual essay.
By the end of the first day, they have a rough draft.
Students review their rough draft individually and in groups. They receive feedback from their peers and counselors. They are given lectures on how to infuse their essay with rich, vivid language, a strong voice, and an organized structure. They also complete certain exercises on effective language, figurative language, and tone in order to apply these skills to their narrative.
By the end of day 2, they have the central aspects of their story finished and have learned how to infuse their essay with story-telling flourishes.
On day 3, it is time to put the finishing touches on their essay. They will go through intensive editing and revisions. Once again they will have the advantage of having their essays peer reviewed and reviewed by the counselors. The essay will be revised until it is free of any errors, polished, well-crafted, and interesting.
Finally, students will receive an introduction into how to brainstorm and write the supplementary essays that are so often required by top schools. When they leave on that final day, they will have a completed essay, ideas for supplementary essays, and a load off their mind.
That’s not all:
Students who attend CEBC also receive the benefit of working with our head college counselor Brigitte Chang. She will review their essay, go over their resume, and help them solidify a college list.
Our College Essay Boot Camp has helped students get into dream schools such as Columbia, Cornell, Fordham, NYU, and many more! Time and again, students have come back to us and told us they never would have been able to write the essay on their own.
