What Is the Common Core State Standard Assessment?
The Common Core State Standard (CCSS) Assessment is the reading, writing, and math evaluation all elementary and middle school students take when they first come to MEK. This assessment is also administered at our monthly test events to help parents and guardians get a better picture of their children’s academic skill levels.
Why Is the Common Core State Standard Assessment Important?
The Common Core State Standard is a set of school curriculum guidelines implemented throughout the United States. You can read the official standards here. The Common Core is also a benchmark for college admissions—your child’s school curriculum is well-aligned with the Redesigned (2016) Official SAT.
MEK uses the CCSS Assessment to evaluate your child’s current skill level in reading, writing, and math. The assessment is the main factor in your child’s course placement and curriculum development at MEK, as all of our programs are aligned closely with the Common Core. The assessment helps teachers, students, and families create an effective path toward academic success.
What’s on the Assessment?
As part of the CCSS Assessment, students take math, reading, and writing evaluations.
The math evaluation tests performance on standard grade objectives dictated by the Common Core. Your child will receive a percent (%) score indicating his/her mastery of grade-appropriate math concepts.
The evaluation also assesses skill level, for which your child will be assigned numerical scores (1-6) in:
- Comprehension of Questions
- Appropriate Tools and Strategies
- Precise Calculations
The reading evaluation is a Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) test, which uses short passages and multiple choice questions to assess your child’s overall reading ability.
- Lexile Percentile: indicates whether your child surpasses or falls behind peers in comprehension, inference, and vocabulary skills
- Lexile Score: measures your child’s ability to read at a particular grade level based on the official Lexile Framework for Reading
The writing evaluation requires students to respond to a prompt with an organized essay in a timed writing environment. We use a Common Core-compliant rubric to assess your child’s current writing ability.
- up to 5th grade: 1-5
- 6th grade and up: 1-6
