Vocabulary Lab is the newest addition to our well-known MEK Lab program! This Lab teaches students grades 4-7 to build a larger word bank by reading Common Core State Standard (CCSS)-aligned non-fiction articles. In Vocabulary Lab, your child will develop new strategies to decipher the meanings of challenging words and learn to study vocabulary efficiently.
Vocabulary Lab is aligned with the Common Core to ensure that your child will use his or her new skills in the classroom immediately.
In addition to reading articles and identifying the pre-selected words in context, students apply their knowledge in various exercises and weekly quizzes.
How does vocabulary facilitate reading comprehension?
There are many ways for students of all grade levels to improve reading comprehension. After years of observing our reading and writing students, we have noticed that there are two main obstacles that negatively impact comprehension: misunderstanding key vocabulary and experiencing a lack of motivation.
Both of these struggles are addressed in Vocabulary Lab–once students define the words that ordinarily confuse them, they are able to understand complex texts in multiple genres.
Vocabulary Lab students must take a reading assessment for course placement.
The assessment is used to determine Lexile Percentile and Lexile Score.
Both factors are used to create a customized curriculum for every child. The evaluation process guarantees that the articles provide the appropriate content and reading challenges for all of our students!
What does the course material include?
Each article comes from a reputable news source, including the NY Times, Washington Post, USA Today, BBC, and more. Vocabulary words are bolded in the article to facilitate the reading process.
Vocabulary Lab helps students build a strong foundation in reading by:
- Exposing them to interesting and relevant non-fiction material
- Building strategies to decipher new words and improve overall comprehension
As students expand their vocabulary, they develop the confidence and motivation to understand new reading material.
