What are the benefits of MEK’s one-on-one tutoring programs vs. group classes?

The main benefit of one-on-one tutoring is that your time spent with your instructor is all about YOU!

How do our tutoring programs work?

Every tutoring program starts with a consultation with one of our expert counselors. From there, you are given a timeline with milestones and an individualized plan to get you to your goal, based on test scores, transcripts obtained via your school’s online grading system, and where you want to be by the end of the process!

Your tutoring sessions are dictated by your progress. This means that you and your instructor move at the pace that best works for your needs. The goal is to always strengthen weaknesses, take skill mastery to the next level, and maintain progress.

What types of tutoring services does MEK offer?

We offer three main tutoring services to fit the needs of our students: School Support Tutoring, Private Test Prep Tutoring, and Academic Enrichment Tutoring.

PROGRAM DETAILS

  • Great for students who are struggling with classroom concepts and want to master the skills that will help them excel
  • Students build strong foundational academic skills, use reinforcement exercises to retain the concepts learned, and have access to professionally proctored Study Hall, as needed
  • Suggested Length: Minimum 5 Sessions

Students who work with MEK see 160+ point improvements in their SAT scores, 6+ point improvements in their ACT score, and score in the top 1% of test takers on College Admissions Exams.

These students have also earned top grades in their classes, mastering challenging topics in high school honors and Advanced Placement courses, and were admitted to top universities and colleges around the country.

Read our case study of one MEK student to see the MEK difference in action!

Who should consider enrolling in our tutoring programs?

Tutoring is a great fit for:

  • Students with busy schedules who can’t make it to our group classes.
  • Students who want one-on-one instruction to reach their goals.
  • Students who are looking to learn at their own pace.
  • Students who need extra help building communication, study, or academic skills
  • Students who need an extra challenge beyond the classroom

MEK offers both virtual and in-person for all of our tutoring programs. Our virtual tutoring sessions are hosted on Zoom and accessed through our Canvas platform so that students can meet with their tutors in live sessions and easily communicate with them between sessions as needed.

Our in-person tutoring sessions take place at our Palisades Park and Closter campuses, allowing students fatigued by virtual learning to be more engaged in an environment that is not limited to the four walls of the computer screen.

All students, regardless of whether they meet with their instructor in-person or virtually, have access to our Canvas platform where they can communicate with their tutor between sessions, chart their progress, and access supplementary materials.

Weekly Simulation Tests

Private Test Prep students are scheduled to take weekly simulation tests to practice test taking skills and regularly assess their progress, which they can take virtually or on-site. Using the scores and score reports that you receive with each simulation test, tutors and academic counselors evaluate whether you are on the right track, and Tutoring Plans are adjusted if necessary. This way, you are always challenged in the right pace and direction.

Independent Study Hall

Not all tutoring students are prescribed Independent Study Hall. However, it has proved helpful in giving students a structured time to complete assessments and assignments to reinforce their learning in the tutoring session. During Independent Study Hall, you will log into a Zoom meeting, where a proctor is waiting for you. The proctor will make sure that you are completing the work that your tutor has assigned, within the time that they specified. The proctor will also be available to answer any logistical questions you may have about your tutoring session.

A High Level of Excellence and Expertise

Our tutors, along with administrators and counselors, work closely with students to pinpoint areas of academic weakness and provide the support that students need to make that weakness a strength. By discussing a student’s individual needs and reviewing their course syllabus and assignments, we are able to create a customized plan to help them reach their goals.

The registration process for any of our tutoring programs is easy!

STEP 1: INQUIRY

The first step to getting started with any of our programs is to contact us. Fill out the Inquiry Form and specify in the box labeled “Tell us how we can help you” that you are interested in one of the tutoring programs! You can also email us directly or call us at 855-346-1410.

STEP 2: STUDENT ASSESSMENT

If you are interested in Private Test Prep, the first step will be to take an evaluation test, which can be taken either virtually or on-site at our Closter campus. The test will be proctored with real test time constraints to evaluate student performance most accurately. You can sign up for a test event, but if you do not see that we are currently hosting an event that corresponds to the exam for which you are seeking guidance, please specify in the Inquiry Form and our administrators will contact you to make specific arrangements.

After the evaluation test, you will be scheduled for a consultation with our expert academic counselors to accurately assess student needs based on the evaluation test results and student goals.

If you are interested in School Support Tutoring or Academic Enrichment, you will go straight to the consultation! You will be asked to provide the following materials before the consultation so our academic counselors can plan accordingly:

  • School transcript
    • Report cards or print-outs of your grade management portal (i.e. PowerSchool, Genesis, Skyward) are sufficient if you do not have access to your transcript!
  • A clear idea of your academic goals!

STEPs 3 & 4: INDIVIDUALIZED TUTORING PLAN & SCHEDULING

Based on the information given and the goals discussed during the consultation, our academic counselors will design your Individualized Tutoring Plan with personalized milestones. These milestones will give light to the number and frequency of sessions, any specific weekly goals or performance indicators, and regular Simulation Tests and/or Independent Study Hall times as needed.

MEK’s Tutoring Programs are designed to get you to your academic and admissions goals at your pace and with your busy schedule in mind. Our expert counselors and instructors work closely with you to help you meet the milestones along your journey that lead to big gains and even bigger success!
