8th grade is one of the most important years of a child’s education. Many students choose to apply to magnet, private, or vocational high schools. Others train to join prestigious academic programs including the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) or prepare for the many challenges found at the end of their middle school careers.
Since 8th grade is such a unique year, we have a variety of programs exclusively designed for this particular age group.
High School Admissions Prep
Depending on the school(s) to which your child plans to apply, he or she will have to take certain admission tests. Catholic schools typically administer the SSAT or HSPT. BCA/Bergen Tech and the Academies at Englewood use their own special exams. Our popular Dual Prep programs help your child streamline exam prep and train for two exams in one highly effective curriculum. No matter where your child plans to apply during Fall 2017, we have a program to help him or her achieve high school application success!
*Summer 2017 Exam Prep 8 students must enroll in one of the following test training programs
- BCA Prep (including Bergen Tech & Academies at Englewood)
- SSAT Prep
- SSAT / BCA Dual Prep
- HSPT Prep
- HSPT / BCA Dual Prep
- SSAT / ISEE or HSPT Dual Prep
Our Dual Prep tracks are both efficient and customizable to tackle your child’s unique application needs. BCA Prep and all Dual Prep variations run from September 2017 to January 2018 to guide your family through the entire high school admissions process.
Foundational Skill Reinforcement: MEK Labs
Math Lab: If your child stepped away from math this summer, it’s time to refresh his or her memory to stay prepared for the challenges found in Common Core math! This is especially important for students with weak operations and/or number sense skills. Most students who grow to hate math are just frustrated by their misunderstanding of key concepts or their weak problem-solving skills. Math Lab tackles both issues to turn your child into a confident mathematician!
Designed for grades 1-10, this program encompasses all major math concepts from elementary through Pre-Algebra. Enroll your child in Math Lab to boost his or her understanding of foundational math topics and improve performance directly in the classroom!
Literacy Lab: Strong writing skills are required to succeed in multiple Common Core subjects—including science labs! To perform well in the school classroom and on important high school admission tests, 8th graders must cultivate their analytical writing skills. This Lab emphasizes using textual evidence for support and developing a deeper understanding of the text to answer advanced comprehension questions. Timed analytical writing skills stand between your child’s current academic ability and his/her dream high school. Literacy Lab provides the effective practice, independent work, and 1-on-1 guidance needed to perfect the timed 5-paragraph essay found on challenging admission tests!
*We may recommend Math Lab and/or Literacy Lab for students who do not meet our HS Exam Prep program entry guidelines.
School Support Tutoring Program
Our *NEW* School Support Tutoring Program is designed to improve performance in Science, Math, and Social Studies classes. The main goal is to help your child achieve and maintain high grades in these important classes to boost his or her overall GPA. Each 1-on-1 tutoring session takes a highly individualized approach to your child’s unique classroom struggles. Students may opt for direct communication between MEK and their schoolteachers for a more cohesive tutoring experience. SSTP sessions include practice taken from MEK curricula as well as directly from your child’s lessons in school.
This program becomes increasingly important as the academic year progresses and students’ weaknesses in particular subjects become more apparent. If your child struggles in Science, Math, or Social Studies and needs focused review of important concepts, 5 weeks of tutoring is recommended.
Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) is a program reserved for the most advanced K-12 learners worldwide. CTY’s talent search group recruits students who have achieved exceptional scores on standardized tests. To become eligible for this prestigious program, students must take an above-grade-level standardized test, such as the PSAT, SAT, or ACT.
Our program is specifically tailored to prepare 7th and 8th grade students for the SAT to meet CTY’s entry requirements. Many of our past students have attended CTY and gone on to highly selective high schools and colleges, which is a testament to our success!
