Elementary – Grade 7
Our Fall 2017 course recommendations for this age group fall into three ranges:
- Kindergarten up through 3rd grade
- Grades 4-7
- 7th grade only
Kindergarten through 3rd grade: Reading Lab
Elementary school students up through the 3rd grade should focus on developing their reading abilities. Early reading skills are crucial for success in all school subjects—including math and science! MEK’s Reading Lab will help your child develop effective reading strategies, boost comprehension skills, and expand vocabulary. We take your child’s interests, current skill level, school curriculum, and reading goals into account when designing an appropriate study plan in Reading Lab.
*All Summer 2017 Reading Lab students should continue with Reading Lab in the fall.
Grades 1-7: Math Lab
Middle school math curricula often skip important aspects of elementary-level math, leaving kids unprepared for future classes or standardized tests. Fractions and the basics of Pre-Algebra are the most important aspects of middle school math. Enroll your child in Math Lab to boost his or her understanding of foundational math topics and improve performance directly in the school classroom. This program will increase your child’s mathematic aptitude and confidence with a unique combination of independent work, 1-on-1 instruction, and supervised practice.
If your child stepped away from math this summer, it’s time to refresh his or her memory to stay prepared for the challenges found in Common Core math! This is especially important for students with weak operations and/or number sense skills. Most students who grow to hate math are just frustrated by their misunderstanding of key concepts or their weak problem-solving skills. Math Lab tackles both issues to turn your child into a confident mathematician!
*All Summer 2017 Math Lab students should continue with Math Lab in the fall.
Grades 4-7: Vocabulary Lab & Writing Lab
Vocabulary, inference, and reading comprehension skills go hand-in-hand. Students who struggle to understand important texts read in school typically have insufficient word banks. Our *NEW* Vocabulary Lab helps students expand their word banks, build valuable study skills, and boost reading comprehension abilities. Students read real-life news articles aligned with the Common Core to reinvigorate their interest in reading. The more students learn and apply new words, the better they understand advanced reading assignments in school! This Lab is especially important for students who score low on their Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) test as part of MEK’s mandatory CCSS Assessment.
Since the implementation of the Common Core, writing ability has become a deciding factor when earning high grades in all subjects. Writing Lab is designed to help students plan, write, and revise a variety of essays both efficiently and effectively. This program also teaches students how to organize their thoughts for clear presentation. Writing Lab gives your child confidence, which is the key to success in English and/or Language Arts classes. These skills also transfer well to future high school admissions and SAT prep!
*Summer 2017 Writing Lab students who showed significant improvement should move on to Literacy Lab in the fall.
Grades 5 and up: School Support Tutoring Program
Our *NEW* School Support Tutoring Program is designed to improve performance in Science, Math, and Social Studies classes. The main goal is to help your child achieve and maintain high grades in these important classes to boost his or her overall GPA. Each 1-on-1 tutoring session takes a highly individualized approach to your child’s unique classroom struggles. Students may opt for direct communication between MEK and their schoolteachers for a more cohesive tutoring experience. SSTP sessions include practice taken from MEK curricula as well as directly from your child’s lessons in school.
This program becomes increasingly important as the academic year progresses and students’ weaknesses in particular subjects become more apparent. If your child struggles in Science, Math, or Social Studies and needs focused review of important concepts, 5 weeks of tutoring is recommended.
7th grade only: CTY Prep
Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) is a program reserved for the most advanced K-12 learners worldwide. CTY’s talent search group recruits students who have achieved exceptional scores on standardized tests. To become eligible for this prestigious program, students must take an above-grade-level standardized test, such as the PSAT, SAT, or ACT.
Our program is specifically tailored to prepare 7th and 8th grade students for the SAT to meet CTY’s entry requirements. Many of our past students have attended CTY and gone on to highly selective high schools and colleges, which is a testament to our success!
