2017 College Info Session: Application Tips and Tricks
On April 22, 2017, MEK Review’s Academic Counseling Services held the annual College Info Session. Our experienced teachers shared valuable advice about the college application process with nearly 130 high school students and their families.
Listed below are some of the most important points discussed at the event! When applying to college, you should…
Create a thread in your resume to tie your story together.
A thread or theme shows colleges who you are, the kind of work you do, and what you are passionate about. Your thread should be some aspect of your interests that is present in all of your activities, community service, and awards!
Put together a realistic college list.
Do your research before applying to college! Focus on finding schools/programs that fit your desired college environment, academic accomplishments, and career aspirations.
Note factors you can control: GPA and SAT/ACT Scores
These aspects are directly related to your academic efforts and performance. (Tip: test training is a must when striving for top college admissions exam scores!)
Note factors you cannot (directly) control: Teacher Recommendation Letters
While you cannot control what your teachers or guidance counselors write, you can control the kind of impression you leave with them. Maintaining positive relationships with your teachers and school mentors is a great way to collect strong letters of recommendation. To ensure that you have put together a well-rounded application, ask both a STEM teacher and a humanities teacher for recommendations.
Find your own voice in your Common App personal statement.
Admissions officers look for essays infused with students’ unique personalities, goals, and maturity. Focus on your personal experiences and strengths when writing while allowing what makes you—you—shine. Vivid details and images will hook the reader and make him/her want to have you around on campus! (See: College Essay Boot Camp and Introspective Writing)
